August 15, 2008
Faisalabad - The Principal Officer of U.S. Consulate Lahore, Bryan Hunt, inaugurated here today an international training workshop on Extrusion Technology at the National Institute of Food Science and Technology, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.
"Agriculture accounts for the largest sector of Pakistan's economy and employs more than 42 percent of the country's labor force," said Mr. Hunt. "I hope this workshop will increase awareness about extrusion technology and its multiple uses in preparation of snack foods, texturized vegetable protein, and fish feed."
The $389,000 Extrusion Center will train and equip Pakistani scientists, students, and food and feed industry personnel in the field of extrusion technology. It was established as part of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded $6.9 million "Pakistan-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperation Program." The program provides grants to support collaborations between Pakistani and U.S. scientists, engineers, and healthcare specialists working on Pakistani agriculture, water, health, economic competitiveness, and environmental sciences.
Since 2002, the U.S. Government, on behalf of the American people, has provided more than $2 billion to Pakistan to improve economic growth, education, health, and governance, and to assist with earthquake reconstruction.
