Partnership to Symbolize Strong Ties between Our Peoples, says U.S. Diplomat Bryan Hunt
Lahore - U.S. Consulate’s Principal Officer Bryan Hunt stated that "partnership between the Consulate and the Punjab University would enhance strong ties between our two peoples" while signing a memorandum of understanding to establish a Lincoln Corner at the University. Vice Chancellor Lt. General (retired) Arshad Mahmood signed the MoU on behalf of the University.
"Punjab University is an ideal place for this facility. An impressive history spanning 125 years, during which it has produced Nobel laureates like the late Dr. Abdus Salam and Har Gobind Khorana -- who I’m pleased to mention is presently teaching at the MIT -- speaks volumes for its academic excellence. We are proud to partner with such an illustrious institution," stated Mr. Hunt.
Lincoln Corner, to be established within the Punjab University’s Central Library, will be a resource center offering information on various aspects of U.S. culture, economy, politics, society and education. The facility will join around 330 such centers established worldwide. The first Lincoln Corner in Pakistan was opened in 2006 at the International Islamic University, Islamabad, with a second one set up at the Peshawar University the same year.
The Corner, named in honor of the 16th President of the United States, "will both symbolize and serve the deepening partnership between our two countries," noted Mr. Hunt. The Corner is expected to open by July 2007.
With professional staff provided by the University, the Lincoln Corner will serve as an information outpost similar to a public library reference service, as well as a place where regular programs, seminars, workshops and other events of mutual interest can be held. The Corner will have a blend of computers and video equipment together with a collection of books, CDs, DVDs, videos and computer software on a variety of subjects. High-speed Internet connection will provide access to extensive online resources as well.
